Spirit of Hope October 29, 2016 – 8:00 p.m.
Building toward Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, “Sprit of Hope” celebrates new Canadians to our local community. Musical history has a long list of composers who were forced to leave their homeland, finding new opportunity and an ability to continue their contributions and evolution of the musical repertoire. This concert celebrates historically significant refugee composers, including Rachmaninov, Bartók, Schönberg, and Hindemith and features one of Canada’s newest composers from the Middle East (Kurdistan), Nauroz Tanya.
Home for the Holidays (Holiday Spectacular on the Hill) December 10, 2016 – 8:00 p.m.
The music we hear over the holidays is steeped in the same rich cultural influence that our communities enjoy as the backbone of Canada. The annual RHPO Holiday Spectacular is a popular concert tradition and great place to celebrate the season, with “Home for the Holidays,” featuring a brand new program of wonderful music from across the globe. With works specifically for the concert hall, there will also be plenty of opportunity for the audience to join the orchestra in song and celebration.
Broadway Showstoppers February 18, 2017 – 8:00 p.m.
Much of the most memorable music of all time comes to us from the Musical Theatre. Canada’s theatre districts have put our major cities on the map in the eyes of the world. “Broadway Showstoppers” features music we have enjoyed in Canadian theatres, including hits across the ages that continue to get our toes tapping. We promise to have you singing your way home after an enchanting evening!
Pride Lands April 15, 2017 – 8:00 p.m.
From the earliest colonial days South African music has developed out of the mingling of local ideas and forms with those imported from outside the country, giving it a special twist that carries with it the unmistakable flavour of the country. Join the RHPO and special guests George St. Kitts and his amazing cast of musicians and singers with music from “The Lion King,” “The Power of One,” and other wonderful music that has made its way from the grasslands to the great white north and into our hearts.
RHPO Last Night At the Proms June 18, 2017 – 7:30 p.m.
The wildly popular annual Proms concert continues to delight audiences with a new docket of symphonic music every year. This year we celebrate Canada’s 150th featuring Canadian composers and their music, to complement the standard “Proms” repertoire. Our enthusiastic audience will have plenty of opportunity to hear your faves, wave your flags, sing with the RHPO, blow your horns, and celebrate Canada’s heritage, to bring an invigorating conclusion to the RHPO season.
